GUM LASER SURGERY

Gum laser surgery and gum contouring are two distinct dental procedures that offer benefits for gum health and appearance. Although they share some similarities, they serve different purposes and address specific dental concerns.

Gum laser surgery, also known as laser gum surgery or laser periodontal therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure primarily used to treat gum disease. By utilizing a laser, infected tissue and bacteria are precisely eliminated from gum pockets, leading to reduced inflammation and enhanced healing. This procedure is often preferred over traditional gum surgery due to its less invasive nature and shorter recovery period.

During gum laser surgery, the dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb the area before using a dental laser to target and remove infected tissue. The laser also helps seal the gum tissue, minimizing the risk of infection and promoting faster healing. Compared to traditional gum surgery, gum laser surgery typically requires less downtime and can be completed in a single visit.

On the other hand, gum contouring, also referred to as gum reshaping, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the gums. It involves the removal of excess gum tissue and reshaping the gum line to achieve a more symmetrical and visually pleasing smile. Gum contouring can address various cosmetic concerns, including a gummy smile, an uneven gum line, or receding gums.

During the gum contouring procedure, a dental laser or scalpel is used to carefully remove excess gum tissue and reshape the gum line. Local anesthesia is applied to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure. Following the treatment, some swelling and discomfort may occur, but they usually subside within a few days.

While both gum laser surgery and gum contouring contribute to gum health and appearance, their purposes differ. Gum laser surgery is recommended for individuals with gum disease or infection, while gum contouring is suitable for those seeking to improve the visual aspect of their gums and achieve an enhanced smile. Your dentist can assess your specific needs and recommend the most suitable treatment approach for you.
